Join Friday Sketch Workshop; Call Out Your Inner Artist

September 25, 2024

COLLEGEVILLE PA – A fall sketch workshop that encourages human artistry, by surrounding its participants with the beauty of nature, is planned for Friday (Sept. 27, 2024) in Collegeville.

Linda Kneeland, a former president of the Philadelphia Society of Botanical Illustrators, will offer instruction on botanical illustration during the workshop from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It’s being held at the master gardens outside the Farm Home and Youth Complex, 1015 Bridge Rd. (Route 113).

The lesson will be preceded by a tour of the demonstration gardens carefully tended by the workshop’s sponsors, the Penn State Master Gardeners of Montgomery County. Those who attend can enjoy the class, and then choose a spot in the garden to sketch, paint, and appreciate its autumn splendor.

The cost for the workshop is $20, payable on site to the instructor at the start of the class.

Advance registration is required for the sketch class. Register by sending an e-mail to sharonjimg@verizon.net, or call Sharon Gross at 610-742-6073. In case of inclement weather, Oct. 4 (Friday) has been set as a rain date.

The demonstration gardens are located at the front of the Farm Home and Youth Complex. They are free to visit and open daily from dawn to dusk. Exhibit areas include herb, shade, foodscaping, sensory, butterfly, and rock gardens. All are intended to provide an inspiring and educational horticultural experience, the master gardeners explain.

About the Master Gardeners

The Penn State Master Gardener Program attracts volunteers to support the outreach mission of Penn State Extension. It uses “unbiased, research-based information to educate the public and communities on best practices in sustainable horticulture and environmental stewardship,” its webpage reports. No prior experience is required.

All volunteers attend a 40-hour basic training in horticultural science. Trainees must then complete 50 hours of volunteer service within their first year to achieve their official master gardener certification. Master gardeners maintain their certifications annually by completing 20 hours of volunteer service, and 10 hours of continuing education.
