COLLEGEVILLE PA – An up to 60-percent chance of rain during Saturday (Sept. 7, 2024), as predicted by the National Weather Service, has prompted the postponement of Collegeville’s Colossal Yard Sale.
The popular sale, which in past years has attracted up to 3,000 shoppers, was re-scheduled for Sept. 14 (Saturday) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the borough’s Waterworks Park, 220 W. First Ave.
The sale’s sponsor, the Collegeville Economic Development Corporation (CEDC), had earlier set aside and publicized Sept. 14 as its rain date alternative.
CEDC knows a thing or two about rain-related incidents. Over the course of its now 12-year run, the sale has either been postponed or canceled on several occasions because Mother Nature declined to cooperate.
“Often the weather is delightful,” CEDC President Cathy Kernen says, but the Mount Holly NJ-based regional weather service is less optimistic this weekend.
Its latest forecast, issued Friday (Sept. 6) at 6:50 p.m., suggests a chance of showers in the area can be expected before 2 p.m. Then showers – and possibly a thunderstorm – are even more likely between 2 and 4 p.m. Winds from the south, of between 5 and 15 miles per hour, could at times gust up to 25 mph, it adds.
What to expect next Saturday (Sept. 14)
Hopefully, Kernan notes, shoppers will be treated next Saturday (Sept. 14) to a “beautiful fall morning.” The re-scheduled event will feature more than 80 sellers; freshly made donuts, coffee, and tea available for purchase from Donut NV; and breakfast and lunch items from Mallies Burgers.
The yard sale “is laid out along tree-shaded paved paths, and is a great opportunity to pick up some exciting treasures and low-cost finds from your neighbors,” Kernan explains. The sale is handicapped accessible, and free parking for shoppers is offered on the park’s large and adjacent playing field.
Sellers present a wide variety of items. Among their tables bargain hunters are likely to find antiques and collectibles, jewelry, clothing for all ages, kids’ toys, and plenty of household items. Expect to find furniture, china and glassware, too; as well as holiday decorations, books, compact discs, power and hand tools, and other goods.
Park visitors can benefit from a shaded playground area for kids.
Sale proceeds benefit the non-profit CEDC, which works to promote businesses in the Collegeville area and organizes fun events for area families throughout the year.
