POTTSTOWN PA – French Creek Elementary School, in the Owen J. Roberts School District (Chester County), is the winner of a $3,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, the organization says.
The grant is part of more than $100,000 the Tennessee-based foundation is distributing in Pennsylvania, it reported Thursday (Aug. 22, 2024). It also represents a portion of more than $4 million it is presenting nationwide, the foundation adds.
Recipients can use the money to buy books, technology, equipment or materials specifically for use by students in kindergarten to 12th grade. At French Creek, according to Owen J. Roberts’ Director of Communications Michael Rodriguez, the grant will be used to purchase new library books.
The school straddles the borders of South Coventry and East Nantmeal townships, at 3590 Coventryville Rd. Its staff teaches children in K-6th grades.
In PA, 14,000 learners expected to benefit
Thirty-one Pennsylvania recipients, including French Creek, received awards ranging from $1,200 to $4,000. Foundation grants within the state, it says, are expected to benefit “nearly 14,000 individuals.”
Also named as foundation grant winners within the Tri-County region were the Fleetwood Area School District in Fleetwood PA (Berks County), $4,000; the Norristown Area School District, Norristown, $4,000, and ACLAMO, Norristown, $4,000 (both Montgomery County).
“We understand investing in youth literacy means investing in the future of students and our collective communities,” foundation Executive Director Denine Torr says. “Through these grants, we hope to enhance the programs’ efforts to foster students’ critical thinking skills, creativity and confidence.”
Applications for the foundation’s 2025 grant cycle will be available online in January. They are intended to support youth, family, summer and adult literacy programs in schools, public libraries, and nonprofit organizations. Applicants’ locations must be within a 15-mile radius of a Dollar General store or facility. Funds can be used for new literacy initiatives or expand existing ones.
During mid-July 2024, an $8,000 Dollar General Literacy Foundation grant was given to the YWCA Tri-County Area. It supported the local non-profit’s adult literacy education program.
