ROYERSFORD PA – A free public distribution of potassium iodide tablets, to be taken only as directed during a declared emergency, is scheduled for Saturday (Aug. 24, 2024) in Limerick.
The tablets are being distributed by the Montgomery County Office of Public Health. They would be used only as a preventative measure against thyroid illnesses that could occur during an radiation-related accident. Those who already possess tablets obtained earlier should check their expiration date to ensure they remain usable.
Tablets are being made available to county residents who live, work, or attend schools within a 10-mile radius of the Limerick Generating Station, 3146 Sanatoga Rd., Pottstown PA. No advance registration is required. The medicine can be picked up during a Saturday drive-through event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Limerick Fire Department, 390 W. Ridge Pike.
The generating station is owned and operated by Constellation Energy Generation LLC, headquartered in Baltimore.
Those using the drive-through also can pick-up materials for other families who are unable to attend. A two-day supply of potassium iodide, also known by the chemical symbol KI, will be offered for each individual.
A similar distribution, but intended only for businesses and not residents, will be held Friday (Aug. 23) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Advance registration for business pickups is required by the county. Registrations must be completed using an online form and submitted by no later than Monday (Aug. 19) The Office of Public Health will e-mail registered businesses with the address for their pick-up location.
