Foodie: Local Coffee Company Grows; So Do Firmer Apples

POTTSTOWN PA – In this edition of Pottstown Foodie, Charlotte Street Coffee Company keeps growing; Sonic Restaurants introduce a new burger; eat your fill at Applebee’s; and research proves apples are firming up nicely.

Charlotte Street Coffee Growing Again

BOYERTOWN PA – The Charlotte Street Coffee Company, which opened during April 2023 in Pottstown and only months later inside the Firefly Cafe and Outpost in Boyertown, is growing again.

At its 59 N. Charlotte St., Pottstown, location, Charlotte Street Coffee has made what it calls “some massive” improvements. They include “upgrading our espresso machine, grinders, and more!,” it says in a recent Facebook post.

In Boyertown, following the collaboration it enjoyed with Firefly, the company is moving to a new space at 30 E. Philadelphia Ave. in the borough. It is expected to open there during early August; possibly as soon as the coming weekend, it also reports.

The Boyertown expansion offers plenty of room for expanded seating, and the availability of large (OK, “giant,” it claims) parking lot for customers. It also is likely to result in the addition of “more items to our menu,” it adds.

Beyond its hand-made beverages – latte, macchiato, americano, cortado, espresso, cold brew, and flavored lemonade – Charlotte Street Coffee is also known for its wide variety of baked goods, sourdough bagels, and other foods.

Sonic Unveils New ‘Smasher’ Cheeseburger

OKLAHOMA CITY OK – Sonic Restaurants will make their new premium Sonic Smasher cheeseburger, priced at $6.49, publicly available nationwide on Aug. 5 (Monday), QSR Magazine reports. Customers who use the Sonic app can buy them sooner, it adds.

The SONIC Smasher is hand-prepared and smashed to order. It features two seasoned and crispy edge-seared Angus beef patties with two slices of American cheese, a creamy and tangy Smasher sauce, crinkle-cut pickles, and diced onions on a soft potato bun. It also will offer a triple-patty version starting at $7.49. Sonic locations are in Royersford, Norristown, and Reading.

Three All-You-Can-Eat Deals at Applebee’s

POTTSTOWN PA – Applebee’s Restaurants on Monday (July 29) said it brought back offers for all-you-can eat choices of boneless wings, riblets, and double-crunch shrimp. Customers can order any one of the three, or mix and match from the variety of flavors and protein options.

They’ll receive an endless supply, accompanied by equally endless fries, for $15.99. The company also is offering beverage specials. The deals are available for a limited time for dine-in, to-go, and delivery orders. Applebee’s operates in Pottstown, Royersford, Exeter, and Audubon.

Study: Science Produces Longer-Lasting Apples

PULLMAN WA – Improvements in apple breeding, growing, and storage during the past 15 years is yielding better quality and firmer fruit. That’s according to a study announced Tuesday (July 30, 2024) by Washington State University.

The study focused on varieties like Cripps Pink, Honeycrisp, Golden Delicious, and others. They were among those that, over time, benefited from “increased inner cortex firmness.” It’s a techie way of saying the apples have better crunch, and can last in cold storage for longer periods. They also have helpful genetic characteristics that can be selectively bred into other varieties.
