Foodie: Crêpes at Eight Area Restaurants Win Yelp ‘Gold Medals’

Crêpes at Eight Area Restaurants Win Yelp 'Gold Medals'

POTTSTOWN PA – Eight restaurants across western Montgomery and eastern Berks counties were acclaimed Friday (July 26, 2024) by Yelp for serving “gold medal-worthy food.”

Yelp, a highly followed restaurant and business rating website, identified the eight among its Top 50 contenders in serving the “Best Crêpes Near Pottstown PA.” One restaurant even made its way into the honored Top 10. And, sadly for its growing fan base, one didn’t make the Top 50 at all.

Crêpes, according to the Culinary Institute of America, are “pancakes made by cooking a batter in a very thin layer. Crêpes are typically stuffed, folded, topped, or layered with sweet or savory fillings.” Importantly, the institute adds, “the thinner the crêpe the better.”

Yelp issued its “Best Crêpes” rankings as the Summer Olympics got under way in Paris. The international sporting events prompted its “gold-medal worthy” declaration, and its focus on the primarily French dish.

But the California-based ratings company was less specific in its definition of what was considered “near Pottstown.” Two restaurants earning top-10 designations were in New Jersey, more than a hour’s drive from the borough.

Locals landing among the Top 50

The restaurant closest to Pottstown to earn a Top-10 distinction was Crepe Place V-DaL, 345 Main St., in Harleysville, 18 miles northeast of the borough. It was ranked as Yelp’s Number 2 choice. Its menu features 14 different dinner and breakfast crêpe varieties, as well as waffles, bubble waffles, breakfast sandwiches, salads, paninis, and flat-bread pizzas.

Also making the list, among its Top 50 choices, were these restaurants:

  • Brooks Breakfast and Lunch Café, Douglassville, ranked Number 20;
  • Sunnybrook Ballroom, Pottstown, Number 23;
  • Buttercup Bistro, Trappe, #25;
  • Grace’s Cafe in Trappe, Number 27;
  • The Energy Station, Harleysville, Number 31;
  • Ateethi, Collegeville, Number 35; and
  • Collegeville Italian Bakery Pizzeria Napoletana, Collegeville, Number 41.

Crepe and Shake, a future contender?

Eight Area Restaurants Win Yelp Crêpe 'Gold Medals'
Crepe and Shake is located in the High Street Terminal, 300 E. High St., Pottstown PA

Unfortunately, in the eyes of its fans, Crepe and Shake at the High Street Terminal, 300 E. High St., didn’t merit a mention in the top-50 compilation. The restaurant opened its doors in late April, and perhaps is considered too new for Yelp’s consideration.

However, Crepe and Shake offers a distinctive menu of savory crêpe selections: Monte Christo, Mediterranean Turkey, Ham and Swiss, and Mediterranean Veggie.

It also lists sweet crêpes that include Nutella, Banana Bacon Peanut Butter, S’mores, and Caramel Apple varieties. The place is also said to serve great ice cream, its Facebook followers say.

Crepe and Shake currently reports its hours as Thursdays from 4-8 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 8 p.m.
