This year’s downtown Pottstown GoFourth! Festival was a precursor to a later Independence Day dance-and-fireworks party at Memorial Park. Along with the traditional holiday parade, it set the mood early by seeming to shine with happiness.

Kids were laughing as they played festival games presented by several sponsors, or concentrated intently while having their faces painted. Adults stopped to chat with neighbors and friends, who filled the asphalt from curb to curb. Commercial vendors were busy selling treats, displaying wares, and providing information.

Above the activity, silently fluttering in a sparse breeze during the hot and very humid day, was an over-sized American flag.

In nearby Smith Family Plaza, young children splashed and cooled off in its fountain. A few stopped briefly, apparently at their parents’ request, as the National Anthem was sung. Then the water play resumed, and their smiles returned.
