COLLEGEVILLE PA – The Friday (June 21, 2024) debut of this year’s free “Movies on the Lawn” at Ursinus College, 601 E. Main St., won’t be on the lawn at all.
The Collegeville Economic Development Corp. (CEDC) late last week said the 8 p.m. screening of Disney’s popular movie, “Wish,” will be moved indoors. The air-conditioned auditorium in Bomberger Hall, located to the left and front of the college’s Berman Museum, is the new venue. It appears as building No. 5 on the college’s online map.
The move is necessary because weather forecasters expect uncomfortably, even dangerous, high temperatures, movie co-sponsor CEDC noted.
The Philadelphia office of the National Weather Service has declared an “excessive heat watch” effective across all of western Montgomery County through Sunday (June 23). It also singled out Collegeville, Pottstown, and Reading as municipalities that could be hit by heat index values nearing 105 degrees.
Movie audience members with long memories will recall something similar happened last year (on June 23, 2023, to be specific). A different Disney movie was to be shown outside. At the time, local weather personalities reported rain storms would break up the party. That movie also was relocated inside, and things went smoothly.
The current change presents no problems, either. The movie, open to the public at no charge, will proceed as planned in Bomberger. The auditorium is filled with comfortable seats. Lawn chairs or blankets that might have been desirable for lawn viewing will not be needed.
While waiting for the film to start, Community Music School faculty pianist Alan Dynin will lead audience members in a sing-a-long of Disney movie songs.
Other activities are scheduled on the campus as well, to provide entertainment before the showing begins.
Free kids art event before the movie
Families with kids of all ages are invited to stop by the sculpture terrace of the Berman Museum of Art. It will conduct a free outdoor cyanotype art workshop, with all supplies provided. The workshop starts at 5 p.m.; advance registration is requested, and available online.
A cyanotype is a simple photographic printing process that creates striking blue and white images. It involves placing objects on light-sensitive paper coated with a mixture of chemicals. After exposing the paper to sunlight, it’s washed in water to reveal the unique blue and white image. It’s a fun way to explore photography without complicated equipment.
This workshop is appropriate for all ages. However, children younger than age 8 should be accompanied by an adult to assist with the chemical processes.
Also on campus Friday
Additionally, the campus is open for outdoor sculpture tours. Visit the Berman Museum to get a free map of all its outdoor art.
The Ursinus College Bookstore will also be open from 6-8:30 p.m. for all summer reading needs. This community bookstore carries popular titles for both adults and children of all ages, as well as Ursinus College apparel and gift ware.
