In Lower Pottsgrove, the brightly painted El Guacamole Mexican Restaurant should open “very soon,” owners say on Facebook. In Pottstown and beyond, Burger King offers free food gifts for its birthday.
Coming Soon: Dip Into ‘El Guacamole’ Mexican Restaurant
LOWER POTTSGROVE PA – A new Mexican restaurant, “El Guacamole,” is anticipated to open “very soon,” its Facebook post reported, at 1192 N. Keim St. in Lower Pottsgrove Township.
There’s been a significant amount of work done at the location, formerly occupied by a series of pizzerias and Italian-themed take-out services. Workers there in recent weeks have been busy cleaning the interior, installing equipment and, most notably, giving its exterior an eye-catching layer of paint.
The owners describe their coming offerings as “original Mexican recipes that will conquer your palate.” They encouraged Facebook page visitors to “come and enjoy the authentic Mexican flavor.”
A grand opening date has yet to be announced.
El Guacamole will join dozens of Mexican restaurants that already operate across western Montgomery, eastern Berks, and northern Chester counties. A few of them launched just this year. More are coming, area municipal officials claim, as evidenced by building permit requests and related business filings.
There’s a simple reason for the increase: strong public demand.
U.S. consumer interest in Mexican food has steadily grown during the past decade. It has resulted in an industry that now annually generates $89 billion dollars in revenue. From 2018 to 2023, Mexican-themed dining grew at a rate of 4.7%, according to IBISWorld, an information provider that tracks more than 5,000 business sectors internationally.
The Pew Research Center, which published a January (2024) report on the rise of all forms of Mexican restaurants from quick service to fine dining, noted that about 1 in 10 U.S. restaurants serve Mexican food.
Demographically, the group currently most inclined to regularly savor a Mexican meal – and Latin cuisine in general – is younger adults, according to food service researcher Datassential. “Aside from the rich and exciting flavors, Mexican food also encourages consumer trial because of its cost,” it said. Modest pricing points make many dishes affordable.
Finally, there’s also a market opportunity, Datassential pointed out.
Pennsylvania is among what the company said is four states with the nation’s lowest share of Mexican restaurants. The other three are Vermont, Maine, and Hawaii. They and the Commonwealth apparently represent natural places to grow.
