LOWER FREDERICK PA – Recreational pursuits for the mind are as important to the Lower Frederick Parks and Recreation Board as are those for the body. In that spirit, the board is launching a summer Book Club.
The club’s first book choice is “The Berry Pickers,” by Amanda Peters. Its discussion of that novel, which was published just a year ago and won the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction, is scheduled for June 1 (2024; Saturday) at 10:30 a.m. The setting will be the pavilion at the township’s Cuddy Park, 102 Colonial Dr., Perkiomenville.
Advance registration is not required, but is encouraged and appreciated. It’s available online now, and open to the public.
Refreshments will be provided, and those who attend also will receive “the official Lower Frederick Book Club bookmark.” In case of bright sun or its alternative, rain, the pavilion will shelter the conversationalists. To ensure all have comfortable seats, participants are asked to bring a beach chair or blanket with them.
The club intends to read three books this year. The second and third choices have not yet been named, but club dates to discuss them are already set aside. They are scheduled for July 13 and Aug. 17, both also at Cuddy Park. Individual sign-up forms will be created for those dates as well.
To readers unable to make one of the discussion dates, “don’t worry!,” organizers say. Feel free to join the later conversations … which is why registration may be valuable. From it, the club will create an e-mail list to keep those interested informed of coming events and notifications.

Dance into summer with “Big Baby”
LOWER FREDERICK PA – Lower Frederick Township’s first entry in its free summer concert series, “The Big Baby Band,” will perform June 27 (Thursday) from 7-9 p.m. at Cuddy Park, 102 Colonial Dr., Perkiomenville.
Those who attend are invited to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating, picnic dinners, leashed and well-behaved pets, and a Frisbee or ball to create a night-time adventure for themselves, the Lower Frederick Parks and Recreation Board said.
The Waffle Cabin food truck will be on site, offering treats for purchase. Get an advance peek at its menu online.
With luck, a rain date won’t be needed. If necessary, it’s already selected: July 3 (Wednesday), at the same times and place.
