Penn Dry Goods Market Draws Visitors to Schwenkfelder

Penn Dry Goods Market Draws Visitors to Schwenkfelder

May 14, 2024

PENNSBURG PA – The weekend following Memorial Day will be a busy one in Pennsburg, as quilt lovers and antiques admirers from across several states arrive at the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center, 105 Seminary St., for its 2024 Penn Dry Goods Market. The annual two-day ticketed event is filled with special exhibits, topical lectures, vendors, and a rummage sale.

The market will welcome visitors May 31 (Friday) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday (June 1) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The popular and well-known antiques show is a fund-raiser for the center. General admission tickets are available now for online purchase at $9, but advance buyers can take advantage of a $1 price reduction using a coupon, also online.

Scheduled as part of this year’s Penn Dry Goods Market are:

  • Two dozen specialized antique dealers selling textiles, folk art, and primitives;
  • Also selling this year are flower arranger Richard Yeakel, silk painter Barbara Tiberio, and ribbon vendor Carol Schmitt;
  • A craft rummage sale during market hours. It features a variety of fabrics, notions, tools, and books, all related to sewing projects;
  • The local debut of “Tribes,” an international traveling show of 30 quilts from the European Patchwork Meeting. They interpret common elements a social group might share. Market visitors will be the first to see the display, after which it will be open June 4 through Aug. 4 to the general public; and
  • A series of lectures on textiles (at top) presented during the two-day period.

The lecture series gets an early start on Sunday (May 19) at 2 p.m. with a Zoom presentation by Dr. Lynn Hulse, co-founder of Ornamental Embroidery. She will speak about the Royal School of Art Needlework shown at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition in 1876. Online registration for programs also is available now.

Those attending any of the scheduled lectures benefit from a bonus: free admission to the antique show. Lecture tickets online cost $25 each, and $30 if bought at the door during the market.

The Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center is the regional history museum for the Upper Perkiomen Valley. It is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, with free admission to visit exhibits or conduct research in the library.
