COLLEGEVILLE PA – Master Gardeners of Montgomery County, a volunteer Penn State Extension group of highly skilled garden experts, are ready to give home gardeners a head start on improving their green spaces. The group is holding its annual plant sale May 18 (Saturday) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside the Extension offices at 1015 Bridge Rd.
The event will be held rain or shine. Parking is free.
This year’s plant buyers and browsers will be able to join free sessions on “Tips for Healthy Soils,” “Herbs,” and “Gardening with Containers.” The sessions will start at 9:45 a.m., each running about 30-45 minutes in length, and will be scheduled several times throughout the morning. The event also features children’s activities.
Master Gardener volunteers will be on hand to provide free, research-based gardening advice. They also can answer general gardening questions, provide information on soil testing, suggest what plants are best for a site, and trouble-shoot flower, fruit, vegetable, lawn, tree, and shrub problems.
The sale features hundreds of annuals, perennials, and woodies. It also offers specialties in herbs and vegetables, native plants, berries, water plants, and Master Gardener-grown plants. Those attending the sale are encouraged to bring their own carts or wagons for shopping convenience.
Purchases can be paid for by check, cash, or credit card. “Cash or checks are recommended for the most efficient checkout experience,” the Extension office reported. Proceeds from the plant sale support Penn State Extension’s educational outreach in county.
Additionally, visitors are welcome to tour the Master Gardeners’ Collegeville demonstration gardens, also outside the office.

Attend upcoming Extension workshops
Two in-person workshops, intended to help expand the gardening knowledge and expertise of Montgomery County residents, will be hosted by the county’s Extension office. Here’s what’s on the agenda:
- “Weed Identification and Management,” two free and identical 90-minute workshops offered June 8 (Saturday) at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. respectively, at the Collegeville location, 1015 Bridge Rd. Each shows participants “how to identify, classify, and control weeds using integrated pest management, and discover their benefits;” and
- “Pollinator Party at Pennypacker Mills,” a free family event scheduled for June 15 (Saturday) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. that celebrates National Pollinator Week. It’s being held at historic Pennypacker Mills in a partnership between Montgomery County Extension and the Friends of Pennypacker Mills. More than a dozen master gardeners will be on hand to answer questions and teach on a variety of subjects. The “immersive experience” includes an educational fair with activities covering bluebirds, bats, bees, butterflies, and native fruits. Kids can enjoy arts and crafts projects. Also, a food truck will be available, and local crafters will sell their homemade goods.
