LOWER FREDERICK PA – The weather was cool and sunny Saturday (March 30, 2024), and families began arriving 45 minutes ahead of the 10 a.m. start scheduled for an Easter egg hunt in Lower Frederick’s Coble Park on Little Road. Kids were ready to storm the field in search of egg-shaped plastic treasures, and parents weren’t far behind.

It was a great day for play on the equipment at Coble Park, accompanied by the excitement of an egg hunt

The township Parks and Recreation Committee organized and produced the highly popular event.

The holiday activity featured something for almost everyone, committee members said, including:

  • An appearance by the Easter Bunny (above and at right), of course;
  • More than 3,000 eggs – some well hidden, some not so much (above) – with several that contained special prizes;
  • Two large chocolate bunnies, two large chocolate “Dino eggs” filled with candy, and two bags of chocolate covered pretzels;
  • Two plush stuffed bunnies;
  • Coupons for free art lessons at Engage Art Studio, which also offered face-painting at the park;
  • An assortment of stickers; and
  • Balloon animals (below), and a raffle for several one-week passes, both presented by Spring Mountain Day Camp.

And then the siren sounded!

Just before starting time, more than 300 children of varied and eligible ages stood anxiously at the edge of the hunting grounds. Their tension grew as township Administrative Assistant Becky Strawbridge gave everyone instructions. Then, at 10 a.m. sharp, Strawbridge blared a siren to begin the hunt (above and below).

Committee members reported the eggs were gone in fewer than 5 minutes.

Many families and onlookers “stayed for a long time afterward,” according to one of those who attended, particularly enjoying visits with the bunny, and the opportunity to head home with a decorative face (above and below).

The committee said the event represented its most successful egg hunt yet. Committee Chair Pam Reich and its seven other members publicly offered their thanks to Engage Arts and Spring Mountain Day Camp for their participation in the day’s family-oriented fun; to Lower Frederick’s public works team for its hands-on assistance, and to the township Board of Supervisors for its support.
