POTTSTOWN PA – Nuns have returned to Steel River Playhouse, 245 E. High St., but this time with a twist in their habits. In the theater’s latest play, “Nunsense A-Men!,” all the characters are portrayed by males (see a video at this link).

Done totally seriously this show is, according to one critic, “no drag.” Nunsense A-men! is similar to the original Nunsense show, but with men substituted as its musical comedy performers. First performed in Brazil, this version of Nunsense premiered in New York in 1998 and has since received rave reviews and standing ovations.

“Nunsense A-Men! is a riot of a good time!,” Director and Choreographer Amanda Morrell promises. “From start to finish, you will be laughing at the crazy antics of the Little Sisters of Hoboken as they put on a show to raise money to bury some of their fellow sisters who died due to an unfortunate soup accident and are currently being stored in the freezer.”

The cast is filled with some faces familiar to local audiences, “but you’ve never seen them like this before,” Morrell says. “I am so excited to share our show and make our audiences laugh, because we could all use a little more laughter in our lives and in the world.”

The book, music, and lyrics are by Dan Goggin. John Williams is the music director. Morrell also serves as interim artistic director of the playhouse.

Performances of Nunsense A-Men! are scheduled for April 12, 19, and 26 (Fridays), and April 13, 20, and 27 (Saturdays), all at 7 p.m.; with matinées April 20 and 27 (Saturdays) and April 14, 21 and 28 (Sundays), all at 2 p.m. The running time for this two act show is about 2 hours, with one intermission. Tickets cost $29 for adults, $24 for seniors age 65 and older, and $17 for students. Tickets are available now online, or by calling the box office at 610-970-1199.

The April 20 matinée will be a relaxed performance, at which individuals with ADD, ADHD, Dementia, Autism, sensory sensitivities, and any other patrons can enjoy a performance where they can freely express themselves. Learn more online about the theater’s relaxed performances.

The opening night sponsors are W. Scott Roberts and Paul Sgambato. The 2023-2024 season is sponsored by Scott and Susan Bentley.
