HARRISBURG PA – The 2024 Easter holiday on Pennsylvania highways was more deadly than in 2023, the State Police reported Monday (April 1, 2024).
From Friday to Sunday (March 29-31), according to data in an agency media release, troopers investigated 407 vehicular crashes across the state that resulted in six deaths and 90 injuries. Intoxicated driving was a factor in 46 of the crashes, two of which were fatal, they added.
The previous year, 2023, saw 411 vehicular crashes resulting in five deaths and 110 injuries during the holiday. None of the 2023 fatalities involved intoxication, troopers said. Also, their report noted they made more arrests for driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol or drugs in the 2024 holiday period, a total of 358, than during 2023, with a total of 329.
This year, the data shows, troopers additionally issued 17,168 traffic citations. The most-ticketed offenses were speeding, 5,285 citations; failing to wear a seatbelt, 557; and failing to secure children in safety seats, 90.
The statistics cover only incidents investigated by State Police, and do not include incidents to which other law enforcement agencies responded.
