Controlled Blasting Next Week on 422 Requires Stoppages

Two 422 Projects Affect MontCo Travelers Next Week

March 30, 2024

LOWER POTTSGROVE PA – Continuing work in the coming week (April 1-7, 2024) on a U.S. Route 422 improvement project across Lower Pottsgrove Township will again require controlled rock blasting to excavate areas for drainage construction, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said. Travel restrictions can be expected as a result, it added.

The department also said it would work during the same period on a second 422 improvement project across Schuylkill, Upper Providence, and Lower Providence townships. It, too, will involve traffic restrictions.

All scheduled activities depend on acceptable weather.

In Lower Pottsgrove Township

Blasting, shoulder reconstruction, and utility installation are part of an $83.6 million project to reconstruct and improve 422 and replace two bridges in and surrounding a 1.7-mile corridor between the Sanatoga Interchange and Porter Road.

The restrictions include:

  • Intermittent 15-minute traffic stoppages and traffic paces Monday through Thursday (April 1-4) daily from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., in both directions on 422 between Evergreen Road and Armand Hammer Boulevard, for controlled blasting;
  • A lane closure Monday through Thursday (April 1-4) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, on eastbound 422 between Keim Street and Evergreen Road, for shoulder reconstruction and clearing; and
  • A lane closure Monday through Thursday (April 1-4) daily from 4 a.m. to 2 p.m., on westbound 422 between Evergreen Road and Hanover Street, for shoulder reconstruction and clearing.

The stoppages and paces are required to protect drivers and workers, and safely perform the blasting, PennDOT said. Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas, because it said backups and delays will occur.

In Schuylkill, Upper Providence, and Lower Providence townships

Sawcutting and concrete patching are part of a $6.9 million project to rehabilitate pavement on eastbound 422 between the Route 29-Phoenixville and Route 363-Trooper Road interchanges.

Its restrictions include:

  • A single-lane pattern with flaggers Monday through Thursday (April 1-4) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Route 23 between Country Club Road and Valley Creek Road in Schuylkill Township (Chester County), for utility installation; and
  • Alternating single-lane closures beginning Sunday (April 7) and continuing on Sundays through Thursdays until September, overnights from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning, on eastbound 422 between the Route 29-Collegeville and Route 23-Valley Forge interchanges in Upper Providence and Lower Providence townships, for sawcutting and concrete patching.
