CHRISTIANSBURG VA – Wendy’s Restaurants is partnering with DoorDash in a new experiment that will deliver its menu items by flying drones to eligible addresses in Christiansburg VA.
The experiment is being conducted with only one restaurant in the Old Dominion State. No plans for a tryout of the flyout in Pennsylvania – or anywhere else, for that matter – were reported in a media release issued Thursday (March 21, 2024) by DoorDash.
In the test, “select local consumers will be able to order eligible menu items from Wendy’s — the pilot’s first restaurant partner — through the DoorDash marketplace and have them delivered via drone,” the release announced. It follows an earlier drones delivery pilot program that DoorDash and Wing launched in Australia in 2022.
That program has been operating for more than a year, it said. Wing is part of Alphabet Inc., the multinational company that also owns Google.
“We’re optimistic about the value drone delivery will bring,” DoorDash Labs Senior Director Harrison Shih said. It’s part of his company’s effort “to offer more efficient, sustainable, and convenient delivery options for consumers,” he added.
Meals “will be prepared and packaged at the Wendy’s location and delivered via a Wing drone, typically in 30 minutes or less,” according to the release.
