Ready for Gardening? Extension Offers 6 April Workshops

Ready for Gardening? Extension Offers April Workshops

March 19, 2024

COLLEGEVILLE PA – Two in-person gardening workshops, including one in Collegeville, and four online gardening webinars are currently scheduled by Penn State Extension county offices through April 19 (Friday), the organization reported in a series of e-mails.

All listed events are open to the public. Most are free, two require payment.

Locally on the Extension calendar is:

  • “Raising Butterflies in Your Own Backyard,” a free in-person event, set for April 16 (Tuesday) from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Montgomery County Farm Home and Youth Foundation, 1015 Bridge Rd., Collegeville. Led by Master Gardener Karrie Hontz, it covers attracting butterflies, nurturing caterpillars, and deepening connections with nature. Tips on plant selection, caterpillar care, and conservation tips also are offered. Space is limited, according to the Extension office, and online advance registration is required.

Other events live or online

Also scheduled are:

  • “Fungi in the Garden,” a webinar with a $10 registration fee, April 9 from 7-8 p.m., on recognizing 10 prevalent yard and garden mushrooms, diagnosing garden problems linked to fungi, and managing “warning sign” fungi in their landscape. Online advance registration is required by April 9.
  • “A Spring Ephemeral Talk and Walk,” an in-person event with a $10 registration fee, April 13 (Saturday) from 10 a.m. to noon at the Smedley Park Environmental Center, 20 Paper Mill Rd., Springfield PA. Master Gardeners Anita Ann Murphy and Debbie Ziegler will discuss benefits of spring ephemerals and ways to include them in a garden. A guided hike led by Master Gardener Stephen Hinds will show where to find these fleeting flowers. Advance online registration is required by April 10.
  • “Choose Native Mini-Workshop,” a free webinar April 16 (Saturday) from 6-8 p.m., to learn about emphasizing Pennsylvania native species, tackling invasive impacts in the built environment, and managing native flora in landscapes and water gardens. This event is being offered at no charge thanks to funding from the Richard King Mellon Foundation the Great Lakes Commission. Online advance registration is required by April 16.
  • “Urban Gardens and Soil Health,” a free webinar for those not seeking certification credits ($10 for those who are) April 19 (Friday) from 8-9 a.m., to discuss understanding soil health through site assessment and tests, determining future land use, and selecting suitable alternative testing methods. Participants will learn how to test their soil, examine soil health, and ensure they grow healthy food. Online advance registration is required by April 19.

For all webinars, registration is required to receive both the link to access the webinar and later access to a post-webinar recording.
