KING OF PRUSSIA PA – Thirteen municipal police departments in portions of western Montgomery and northern Chester counties say they are focused on an “aggressive” effort, through April 28, to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities on area roadways.
The law enforcement campaign is being led by Pennsylvania State Police. It looks to curtail distracted driving and speeding, and improve work zone awareness, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said in a media release.
Additionally, drivers who unsafe behaviors such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely, or other aggressive actions also will be cited, troopers and the departments warned.
Local police forces that agreed to participate are:
In western Montgomery County:
- Collegeville Borough,
- Douglas Township,
- Limerick Township,
- Lower Pottsgrove Township,
- Lower Salford Township,
- Marlborough Township,
- New Hanover Township,
- Pottstown Borough,
- Upper Pottsgrove Township, and
- Upper Providence Township;
… and in northern Chester County:
- East Coventry Township,
- East Pikeland Township, and
- North Coventry Township.
The departments and state police will use traffic enforcement zones, saturation patrols, speed enforcement details, corridor enforcement, work zone enforcement, and multi-jurisdictional patrol strategies to identify and cite aggressive drivers. “Any aggressive driver stopped by police will receive a ticket,” PennDOT pledged.
In the past, many participating police departments have incurred overtime hours and other costs as a result of patrols and efforts attributable to similar campaigns. They are usually reimbursed from state or federal funding. For this campaign, PennDOT acknowledged, they will be paid with federal funds received by the agency from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
