READING PA – The Berks County commercial bread and roll bakery of Bimbo Bakeries USA, 640 Park Ave., was recognized Thursday (March 14, 2024) by the federal Environmental Protection Agency as one of the most energy-efficient manufacturing plants in the nation. It also was the only Pennsylvania manufacturer to earn the agency’s 2023 Energy Star certification.
Bimbo Bakeries, part of the international Group Bimbo, produces labeled goods for the Thomas, Sara Lee, Entenmann’s, and Arnold’s brand names, as well as several others.
The Energy Star designation is reserved by the agency only for manufacturing plants that rank within the top 25% of energy efficiency in their sectors. Bimbo also received the award in 2022.
The agency noted the company has installed advanced controls and high-efficiency burners in its ovens, oxidizers, and boilers. It said it also expanded investments in metering systems that enabled real-time energy usage monitoring and control.
