U.S. 422 Road Work Continues Next Week at Two Areas
The U.S. Route 422 bridge as it crosses South Sanatoga Road

422-Related Excavation Starts; S. Sanatoga Rd. Closing

March 4, 2024

LOWER POTTSGROVE TOWNSHIP PA – Excavation and drainage installations that start Monday and continue through Thursday (March 4-7) will intermittently close lanes on parts of U.S. Route 422 in Lower Pottsgrove, creating traffic restrictions. Also beginning Monday, a portion of South Sanatoga Road will be closed and detoured through April 15.

The District 6 office of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in King of Prussia issued reminders on both plans during the weekend. The work is part of PennDOT’s $83.6 million upgrade for 1.7 miles of the four-lane highway between the Sanatoga Interchange and Porter Road in the township.

The travel restrictions include:

  • An intermittent lane and shoulder closure, daily from 4 a.m. to 2 p.m., in place on westbound 422 between Evergreen Road and Armand Hammer Boulevard;
  • An intermittent lane and shoulder closure, daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., in place on eastbound 422 between Armand Hammer Boulevard and Evergreen Road; and
  • Closure of South Sanatoga Road for water and sewer relocations, from Monday through April 15, between Linfield Road and East High Street. A posted detour route will direct drivers to use Linfield Road, Evergreen Road and High Street.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling through or near the work areas. Backups and delays will occur, PennDOT said. All scheduled activities depend on acceptable weather. It is not yet known if, or how, this week’s rain storms predicted by the National Weather Service will affect PennDOT’s schedule.

Access available to Sanatoga Park

The township’s Emergency Management Office, in a Facebook post, reported that Sanatoga Park – which will be inaccessible from South Sanatoga Road due to the closure – remains open for use. It directed the public to reach the park using its South Park Road entrance.

As part of this project, PennDOT said:

  • 422 will be reconstructed on both existing and revised alignments to improve horizontal curve radii, shoulder widths, and vertical clearance to enhance travel and safety;
  • A culvert at Sprogels Run, located just east of Porter Road, along with an existing single-span bridge carrying 422 over Porter Road, will be removed and replaced with a new two-span bridge;
  • The bridge carrying 422 over Sanatoga Road and Sanatoga Creek will also be reconstructed and widened;
  • Reconstructing and lengthening the acceleration ramp from the Sanatoga Interchange (Township Line Road) to westbound 422;
  • Installing Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) equipment and components along the 422 corridor and on arterial roadways;
  • Constructing sound barriers along portions of westbound 422;
  • Upgrading existing signage and installing new signage;
  • Replacing the closed system drainage system and cross culverts throughout the project limits; and
  • Improving stormwater management facilities, including two extended detention basins.
