Weekend Stuff March 1-3: A Past Travels Calendar

POTTSTOWN PA – Weekend visits to museums and historical places often rise during winter months, when they become ever-more-interesting places to be. Their interior warmth, colorful exhibits, and attention-grabbing activities attract visitors looking for fun while fleeing rain, cold, wind, and snow.

It’s no surprise, then, that museum events abound on this edition of the “Weekend Stuff to Do” calendar. You can find displays and programs at the:

  • Center for Pennsylvania German Studies in Trappe,
  • Spring-Ford Area Historical Society in Royersford,
  • Studio B Fine Art Gallery in Boyertown,
  • Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center in Pennsburg,
  • Daniel Boone Homestead in Birdsboro,
  • Hibernia Mansion in Coatesville (at top),
  • the Philadelphia Flower Show, and the
  • National Museum of Industrial History in Bethlehem.

Some weekend events are free. Some have fees (labeled as “ticketed”). Some have limitations, registrations, or other conditions. Some may be affected by weather conditions (hint: if unsure, call before you go). Each weekend listing includes a link for more information.

Friday, March 1

  • “Fraktur in Miniature,” 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., free, an exhibit featuring 30 miniature artworks of Fraktur, a Pennsylvania German tradition of calligraphy and art, all made between 1769 and 1853; at the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center, 105 Seminary St., Pennsburg PA
  • “New and Improved! The Age of Convenience in the Home,” 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., ticketed, an exhibit on striving for the American Dream and national electrification from post-World War II until the 1970s, at the National Museum of Industrial History, 602 E. 2nd Street, Bethlehem PA

  • “Fraktur in Miniature,” 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., free, an exhibit featuring 30 miniature artworks of Fraktur, a Pennsylvania German tradition of calligraphy and art, all made between 1769 and 1853; at the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center, 105 Seminary St., Pennsburg PA
  • Exhibit: Native Son: The Life & Art of David Ellinger, (Saturdays through July 28) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., ticketed, his paintings reportedly “played a pivotal role in kindling widespread fascination with Pennsylvania German culture during the latter half of the 20th century;” nearly 100 works on display, at the Center for Pennsylvania German Studies in the Dewees Tavern, 301 W. Main St., Trappe PA
  • “New and Improved! The Age of Convenience in the Home,” 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., ticketed, an exhibit on striving for the American Dream and national electrification from post-World War II until the 1970s, at the National Museum of Industrial History, 602 E. 2nd Street, Bethlehem PA
  • Philadelphia Flower Show, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., ticketed, nation’s largest and world’s longest-running horticultural event, conducted by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, with guided tours, special activities, programs, and events, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, 1101 Arch St., Philadelphia PA
  • Hibernia Mansion Guided Tour, 10-11 a.m., free, view the fully restored and furnished Chester County home of several ironmasters and their families from the late 1700s through the late 1800s, appropriate for all ages but steps and stairs are part of the tour, no pets allowed, at Hibernia County Park, 1 Park Rd., Coatesville PA
  • “Pennsylvania German Egg Decorating Workshop,” 10-11:30 a.m., ticketed, a hands-on workshop to make your own scratch-decorated Easter eggs and explore its traditions using historic examples as inspiration, pre-dyed eggs and all necessary tools supplied, at Dewees Tavern, 301 W. Main Street, Trappe PA
