Troopers: Five Die in Crashes Over New Year ’24 Holiday

January 3, 2024

HARRISBURG PA – In its annual report on New Year’s holiday traffic crashes and incidents, the Pennsylvania State Police said it arrested 326 people statewide for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the three-day period between Saturday and Monday (Dec. 31, 2023 to Jan. 1, 2024).

The agency also said it investigated 336 crashes, in which a total of five people died and another 68 were injured. Alcohol was a factor in 47 crashes, it added. This year’s number of accident-related fatalities was far higher than in 2023; no one died as the result of a crash during last year’s holiday, it reported.

In contrast, the total number of crashes across the state during the 2024 holiday was significantly lower than the similar period last year, statistics released by state police show. Traffic stats recorded for each of the state’s 16 troops were made available online.

Also statewide, troopers said, they issued:

  • 3,833 speeding citations;
  • 344 citations for failing to wear a seat belt;
  • 56 citations for failing to secure children in safety seats; and
  • 8,125 citations for other infractions.
