Historian Bob Wood Talks About Corn Jan. 10 in Pennsburg

Historian Wood Talks About Corn Wednesday in Pennsburg

January 2, 2024

PENNSBURG PA – Popular local historian Bob Wood, offering a discussion of “The Story of Corn: Its Origin, Cultivation, and Uses,” will be the featured speaker during the Jan. 10 (2024; Wednesday) Brown Bag Lecture at the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center, 105 Seminary St.

The noon program is free to attend in person and open to the public. It also will be offered free in a virtual format on Zoom. For either presentation, register in advance by calling the center at 215-679-3103, or send an e-mail to info@schwenkfelder.org.

Native American maize was among new food cultivars that the Germanic immigrants found here. Wood will discuss how, for man and livestock, corn soon became an essential crop. Feel free to bring a lunch to the in-person talk (in your own brown bag, or other suitable carrier!), or enjoy a lunch from wherever you watch the virtual event.

This January program was re-scheduled following a Sept. 13 (2023) postponement.

The Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center is the regional history museum for Pennsylvania’s Upper Perkiomen Valley. Admission to visit exhibits or conduct research in its library is free. It is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Sundays from 1-4 p.m.
