Local Museums, Historical Groups Win Thousands in Grants

HARRISBURG PA – Money expected to “strengthen Pennsylvania’s museum community” have been announced for 15 organizations in Berks, Chester, and Montgomery counties, the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission said. The commission is the state’s official history agency.

Among top grant recipients were:

  • Colebrookdale Railroad Preservation Trust in Boyertown, Berks County, $20,702;
  • Chester County History Center in West Chester, Chester County, $20,305; and
  • National Audubon Society in Audubon, Montgomery County, $9,708.

Also receiving grants in Berks County (totaling $60,895) were the Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles, $8,132; General Carl Spaatz Regional USAAC Museum, Boyertown, $4,000; Foundation for the Reading Public Museum, $19,159; and Berks History Center, Reading, $8,902.

Additional recipients in Chester County (totaling $47,858) were the American Helicopter Museum & Education Center, West Chester, $5,724; Graystone Society Inc., Coatesville, $7,358; and Historic Yellow Springs, Chester Springs, $14,471.

Winning other grants in Montgomery County Montgomery (totaling $31,936) were the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center, $6,228; Historic Trappe, Trappe, $4,000; Mennonite Historians of Eastern Pennsylvania, Harleysville, $4,000; Historical Society of Montgomery County, Norristown, $4,000; and Morgan Log House Historical Society, Lansdale, $4,000.

The local funding was included as part of nearly $2 million in cultural and historical support grants announced Dec. 11 (2023; Monday) to 158 entities in 58 Pennsylvania counties. The money is intended to support “the general operations of eligible museums and official county historical societies … not supported by other state agency funding programs,” the commission reported.

Grants are awarded on a formula based on a percentage of the organization’s annual operating budget. The maximum grant award is $44,945; the minimum, $4,000.

Daily Voice Pottstown. Covers municipalities in western Montgomery County and beyond.

Berks Community Television. Covers Berks County.

Spotlight PA. An investigative news service for Pennsylvania, supported by several news organizations statewide. It is starting a Berks County Edition.
