YORK PA – One of the nation’s makers of animal crackers, enjoyed by kids and adults alike, said Wednesday (Dec. 5, 2023) it was introducing a modern spin on the decades-old treat. “Stauffer’s Simply Animals™,” manufactured by the York PA-based D.F. Stauffer Biscuit Co. Inc., contains no high fructose corn syrup, no artificial colors or flavors, and is peanut-free, according to the company.
The product, which Stauffer is promoting as “a cleaner version” of animal crackers, will soon be test marketed in selected Food City and Weis Markets stores, it added. “Our consumer research was very positive during the development of the brand,” company Vice President of Sales and Marketing Ken Vlazny Sr. reported. “We’re now looking forward to observing how the shopper reacts in the market.”
For its market test the updated ingredient formula will debut in favorite Stauffer flavors, chocolate and original, with 120-130 calories per serving. The original flavor will be available in a 16-ounce bag, and a bag of 12 single-serve packs. Chocolate will be available in a 14-1/2-ounce bag.
Stauffer’s also said it hopes to expand its Simply Animals’ “character universe” once the product launches nationally. It plans to emphasize lively, socially-responsible stories featuring Simply Animals’ characters “to create a meaningful, interactive experience for children and their parents,” a media release stated. Bryson the Bear and Taylor the Tiger are the brand’s introductory mascots.
Over the years, Stauffer’s has added full lines of baked snacks that include its popular SNAPS™, Whales® Baked Cheddar Crackers, seasonal favorites and other items. The company, founded in 1871, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Meiji America Inc.
