Coventry Singers Schedule Two Local Holiday Concerts

Coventry Singers’ Concerts Scheduled Saturday, Sunday

December 2, 2023

POTTSTOWN PA – In two holiday concert performances scheduled for Saturday and Sunday (Dec. 2 and 3, 2023), the Coventry Singers will continue a tradition that spans the group’s 50-year history.

The concerts, titled “I Wish You Christmas,” are set for Saturday at 3 p.m. in Cedarville Methodist Church, 1092 Laurelwood Rd.; and Sunday at 3 p.m. in Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, 60 N. Hanover St. Both events are free to attend and open to the public. Free will offerings, however, will be “gratefully accepted,” the group noted.

Highlighting the program will be “For Unto Us a Child is Born”, a Christmas cantata by J. S. Bach. The singers will be accompanied on the work by Trinity church organist William Conrad. Also on the program are selections from the Albert Burt Carols, fun holiday favorites including “Do You Hear What I Hear,” “Thirty-Second Fa-La-La” and the beautiful “I Wish You Christmas.”

Coventry Singers is a community choral organization of auditioned singers known for performing diverse and challenging choral music. During its 50-year history, the group has performed major choral works that include those of Handel, Bach, Haydn, Rutter, Finzi and Faure. The singers’ programs also cover lighter works, both sacred and secular, with what they describe as “a frequent dose of humor and frivolity.”

The number of performers range from 30 to 40 people from all walks of life. Some have professional musical experience, some are or have been teachers of music. Many are people who just love to sing, and welcome musical challenges.

Director Cheryl Markofski will again lead Coventry Singers as its musical director. She is a graduate of Florida State University with a master of music degree, and has done graduate work in voice performance at the University of Texas. Cheryl taught music at Owen J. Roberts Middle School, and is also a noted soloist and voice coach.

Accompanist Eleanor Lundy is in her third season with Coventry Singers. She has taught piano and served as musical director and substitute musician at several churches in New England and Montgomery County. She is a graduate of Rosemont College.

Coventry Singers is “always ready to welcome new voices” coming together for the love of music and singing. Anyone interested in joining the group for its coming spring concert is asked to check the group’s Facebook page for audition January 2024 dates and times.
