Berks, MontCo EV Charging Projects Win Federal Grants

Berks, MontCo EV Charging Projects Win Federal Grants

August 15, 2023

HARRISBURG PA – Electric vehicle travel in Montgomery and Berks counties is expected to get a boost from new charging stations to be installed at three selected locations, thanks to federal funding.

Gov. Josh Shapiro’s administration on Monday (Aug. 14, 2023) said Montgomery County sites in Lansdale and Horsham, and a Berks County site in Bethel, were among 54 projects to benefit from $33.8 million in Pennsylvania’s conditional first round of federal Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Funding.

  • Electrify America LLC won $741,290 to install a charging station at the Sheetz retail site in Bethel, near Exit 13 of Interstate 78;
  • Wawa Inc. won $733,025 for a station at its Horsham location, near Exit 343 of Interstate 276; and
  • Tesla Inc. was named to get $211,165 for a station at the Wawa retail site in Lansdale, near Exit 31 of Interstate 476.

Four federally compliant charging ports will created at each charging location, representing a total of 216 ports statewide. Twenty-two projects are in, or within half-mile of, state or federally designated disadvantaged communities.

Another $171 million expected over 5 years

The administration claimed the grants advance its “work to address climate change, grow the Commonwealth’s economy,” and ensure Pennsylvania transportation is cleaner, safer, more affordable, and more reliable. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, which distributes and oversees the funds, said another $171.5 million is anticipated over five years.

It added the investments also “will create good-paying jobs.” The installations are conditioned on successful completion of federal reviews and agreements with each recipient. Some projects may begin by late 2023, the state estimated. Projects were evaluated on a competitive basis following federal requirements and other factors, it added.
